What are Cannabinoids

If you are familiar with THC or CBD you will probably have come across the word 'cannabinoids'. But what exactly are cannabinoids, and why are these substances so important? The cannabis plant contains more than 100 different chemical compounds known as cannabinoids. Cannabinoids were first discovered in the 1940s when CBD and CBN were identified. The structure of THC was first discovered in 1964.

The endocannabinoid system

When the effect of cannabis on the human body was investigated, scientists came across an important discovery: the endocannabinoid system. This body-specific system is located in our brain. Our bodies make substances themselves that are very similar to the chemical compounds that you find in the cannabis plant. These substances that are naturally produced in our body are called endocannabinoids, they are so similar to the cannabinoiodn in cannabis that they are recognized as being native to us.

The scientific research that has mainly been done in Israel and Spain has done some interesting discoveries. It has since been shown that the endocannabinoid system in our brain is involved in certain processes in the body, including the regulation of hunger, pain and our blood pressure. There are also strong indications that our endocannabinoid system plays an important role in controlling certain brain functions, such as memory, concentration and impulsiveness. Endocannabinoids act, among other things, as neuromodulators that inhibit or stimulate the release of other neurotransmitters such as GABA and glutamate.

The most common cannabinoids

Below we describe the most important and common cannabinoids. We of course start with THC, along with CBD and CBN this was one of the first active substances in the cannabis plant that were discovered.

THC / tetrahydrocannabinol

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is one of the psychoactive substances that occurs exclusively in cannabis. THC has been shown to have a large number of medical benefits. THC is most commonly associated with a high / euphorish feeling when using cannabis. THC has very high psychoactive properties. The THC level usually varies between 5 and 25 percent. Increased intake of THC can cause adverse side effects, such as disorientation, short-term memory loss and even hallucinations of depression, anger, or anxiety.

CBD has by far the most medicinal benefits of all cannabioids in cannabis. CBD reduces certain influences of THC such as psychoactivity. Cannabis contains an average CBD percentage of 1.0% to 12 percent.Cannabidiol (CBD) is not psychoactive, it was thought that CBD did not affect the psychoactivity of THC. However, the more recent research shows that smokers of cannabis with a higher CBD / THC ratio were less likely to experience schizophrenia-like symptoms. Cannabidiol has also been shown to act as a 5-HT 1A receptor agonist, an action involved in antidepressant anxiolytic and neuroprotective effects. it seems to relieve convulsion, inflammation, anxiety and nausea. CBD has a greater affinity for the CB2 receptor than for the CB1 receptor. CBD apparently plays a role in preventing short-term memory loss associated with THC.

There is very little CBN present in fresh cannabis plants. The more CBN the less THC, medicinal cannabis with a high CBN level can be an indication of the freshness of the cannabis and incorrect treatment of the cannabis. Cannabis with a high CBN level has been shown to cause unwanted symptoms such as confusion and dizziness. The CBN level increases as THC degrades when stored, and when exposed to light and air. It is only slightly psychoactive.
