How to harvest, dry, cure and store weed
After weeks of taking good care of your cannabis plants, it's finally time to harvest. But where do you start and what do you need? There are several things you need to cut your cannabis plant and store your weed safely. After harvesting, it is also important to let your weed dry and cure properly. In our headshop you will find all the growing supplies you need for this.
When to harvest a cannabis plant
You're probably wondering how you know when your cannabis plant is ready to harvest. The moment the cannabis plant is ready to grab your scissors and cut depends on the strain of cannabis. When you grow autoflower seeds, the cannabis plant has a flowering period of 6 to 8 weeks. All other cannabis seeds usually have a longer flowering time. There is also a difference between outdoor and indoor growing. You can read more information about flowering time, THC content, length and yield. Deciding when to harvest a cannabis plant is based on the colour of the trichomes.
What happens if weed is harvested too late?
Since our cannabis seeds are organic, the harvest moment can be slightly different for each plant. This is why it is important to pay close attention at the end of the flowering period. For this, you can use a microscope to look at the THC crystals. The colour of the trichomes will tell you when to harvest. These are the glistening hairs on your cannabis buds. When you harvest at the right time, all active substances are at optimal strength. If you harvest too late, the THC content decreases and you are more likely to get mould, but if you harvest too early, the weed is less strong and a smaller yield. Read more about this in our article cannabis plant harvesting.
How do you dry weed?
After your plants have been harvested, it's time to let them dry. Weed dries best in a dark space because THC is broken down by light. In addition, the temperature in the drying space is important. Make sure the temperature is between 17°C and 21°C. If your space is too warm, the psychoactive substances are activated too soon. That, of course, is a waste of your weed. Humidity also affects the quality of the weed. When the humidity in your drying space is around 50%, you prevent mould and dehydration. Use a hygrometer for this, especially if you are going to dry a large quantity of weed. On the display you can read the temperature and humidity at a glance.
How long should weed dry and what gear do you need?
You can hang your weed buds or place them on a drying rack with enough space in between and good ventilation. After the moisture has evaporated and your weed has dried, it has lost between 65 and 80% of its weight. Keep in mind that it will take two to three weeks for your weed to dry. You can easily check this by snapping a twig. When it snaps at once, your weed is dry and ready to cure. Below is a list of handy gear to use while harvesting and drying your cannabis plants.
- Weed scissors
- Microscope
- Drying rack
- Hygrometer
Curing weed
Weed curing is important for the quality of your weed. This process benefits the effect, smell and taste of your weed. Curing cannabis takes about a month. Put the weed in a storage jar or Tightvac that is sealed airtight and add with moisture control packets (Boveda or Integra Boost). These humidi packs provide the ideal humidity.
