Everything about pH meters: measurements, values and functionalities

A pH meter is an essential instrument for measuring the acidity or alkalinity of a liquid, referred to as the pH value. The pH value ranges on a scale from 0 to 14, with 7 being considered neutral. This value provides information about the concentration of hydrogen ions in solution and is crucial in a variety of fields, including science, industry, agriculture and the environment.

What do you measure with a pH meter?

A pH meter measures the activity of hydrogen ions (H⁺) in a solution. The higher the concentration of H⁺ ions, the more acidic the solution and lower the pH value. Conversely, lower concentrations of H⁺ ions lead to higher pH values, indicating alkalinity or basicity.

How should you measure pH?

  1. Calibration: Before measuring, calibrate the pH meter using known pH standard solutions, such as pH 4.01, 7.01 and 10.01. This ensures accurate measurements.
  2. Preparation: Rinse the electrode with distilled water to remove residues. Then gently dab the electrode dry with a clean cloth.
  3. Measurement: Place the electrode in the liquid you want to measure. Wait until the measurement is stable, and read the pH value on the display.
  4. Cleaning: Rinse the electrode again with distilled water and store it in storage solution to prevent drying out and contamination. With some meters, however, it is not necessary to use storage solution.

What pH value is normal?

A pH of 7 is considered neutral, like pure water. A pH lower than 7 indicates acidic, while a pH higher than 7 indicates a basic or alkaline solution. In practice, pH values vary depending on the specific application. For example, the pH of human skin usually ranges between 4.7 and 5.75, while gastric juice is extremely acidic with a pH of around 1.5 to 3.5.

What happens if your pH is too high?

Too high a pH in a solution can have serious consequences. In industrial processes, it can affect the efficiency of chemical reactions, causing production problems. In agriculture and horticulture, a too high pH can reduce plants' absorption of essential nutrients, negatively affecting growth and health. In the human body, a disturbed pH balance can lead to health problems such as heartburn, indigestion or alkalosis.

Calibration solutions for pH meters

Calibration solutions are crucial for accurate calibration of pH meters. These liquids have a known and stable pH value, and are used as reference points to set the pH meter correctly. The most commonly used calibration solutions have pH values of 4.01, 7.01 and 10.01, corresponding to acidic, neutral and basic respectively.

  • pH 4.01: This solution represents the most acidic point on the pH scale and is used to calibrate the pH meter for low pH values.
  • pH 7.01: This represents the neutral point on the pH scale and is used to calibrate the pH meter for neutral values.
  • pH 10.01: Represents an alkaline solution and is used to calibrate the pH meter for higher pH values.

Correctly calibrating a pH meter with these calibration liquids ensures accurate readings in the desired pH ranges.

What are EC meters and combi meters?

EC meters (Electrical Conductivity): An EC meter measures the electrical conductivity of a solution, which is directly related to the amount of dissolved salts or ions in the water. This is important for monitoring water quality, nutrients in soils, and industrial processes.

Combi meters: Combi meters combine the functionalities of a pH meter and an EC meter. They measure both pH and electrical conductivity, making them particularly useful for use in hydroponics, aquaponics and other applications where both pH and EC are important.
